KNOW A YOUNG KIWI WHO'S GOING THROUGH HELL – OR ONE WHO'S HELPING OTHERS OUT OF A HELLISH SITUATION?

As a young-at-heart and fun-loving Kiwi-owned business, HELL loves to see young New Zealanders doing well. So when we hear about kids having a tough time, we’ll try to make a difference wherever we can.

That’s why Satan’s Little Helper was sent on his quest to cut a break for good young souls struck down by the big guy in the sky.

We also know there are many others out there fighting the good fight, and so we’ve launched Satan’s Biggest Little Helper to recognise under-23-year-olds going above and beyond to help create a better future for others.

If you know of any under-18s worthy of un-divine intervention, or would like to recognise the hard toil of an under 23-year-old who’s gone the extra mile, nominate them now and SLH will see what he can do to help and support them.

  • Pizza treats for special twins

Tauranga twins Felix and Madeline Fowler-Oates recently celebrated an extra-special fifth birthday – and HELL served up some delicious party pizzas to mark the occasion.

Felix and Madeline were both born with complex health needs and their mother, Nikki, says she has previously avoided throwing birthday parties because of the difficulties involved. Given the significance of this year’s milestone, she decided this year should be different.

“Felix is autistic and was born with no arms; Madeline is blind, medically complex and a wheelchair user. They’ve both spent a lot of time in and out of hospital and need a great deal of extra care in their day-to-day lives,” she says.

To make the twins’ birthday more special, Nikki invited a number of their friends, carers, support staff and volunteers who have helped them and the family throughout their journey.

“We’re surrounded by so many wonderful people, who go out of their way to make life easier for us all. We wanted to enjoy some quality time with them celebrating the twins’ achievements, and also thank them all for everything they’ve done.”

With around 50 guests to feed, Nikki got in touch with Satan’s Little Helper for some help. Moved by the family’s story, he asked his friends at HELL Papamoa to whip up a special order of 19 pizzas to ensure no one at the party went hungry.

“It was fantastic! Everybody really enjoyed it, especially Madeline and Felix. We had a few people who were unable to make it because they were sick, and I was worried there would be too much pizza, but thankfully everyone stepped up to the plate!

“Thank you Satan’s Little Helper for helping to make the day such a success!”

  • Priceless pony party!

Nine-year-old Eleanor Marshall hasn’t had the easiest ride in life, so Satan’s Little Helper decided to organise some quality time in the saddle to help the young animal lover celebrate her birthday

Eleanor, who was born with several challenging conditions, including limited upper body strength, has always loved animals.

Her kind spirit extends to helping raise money for the local soup kitchen and she even sacrificed her Christmas presents last year in favour of putting together a care package for the Salvation Army store in Porirua.

To help celebrate her ninth birthday, Satan’s Little Helper organised a party for Eleanor and her friends at Thompson’s Horse Centre, with plenty of HELL pizza on hand to feed the hungry young riders.

Eleanor says they all had a lot of fun.

“I got to ride the biggest horse and we all pretended to be cowgirls and cowboys when we rode around the farm. We had lots of yummy food and mummy made me a My Little Pony cake – it was tasty!” she says.

Her mother Joanne says that as well as the sheer joy of it, horse riding is also physically beneficial for Eleanor.

“Because of her condition, she’s limited in what activities and sports she can do without feeling pain. Horse riding actually helps her build up her strength because of the way you have to sit,” says Joanne. “All the kids really enjoyed themselves and it was awesome to see.”

Eleanor can look forward to horsing around again in the near future, as Satan’s Little Helper organised some extra lessons at Thompson’s to help her further develop her strength – and simply enjoy herself!

  • HELL spreads yellow fever!

While the Wellington Phoenix had to fight for a 2-2 draw against the Western Sydney Wanderers FC at Mt Smart Stadium in December, Hamilton’s Dylan Francis walked away from the game a winner thanks to some slick playmaking from Satan’s Little Helper.

Dylan has mild Asperger’s, which affects social interaction, and lost his father to cancer at a young age. After hearing the 12-year-old’s story from his stepfather Matt Faber, HELL organized a special package for the keen football fan.

Along with four tickets to the Mt Smart match, Dylan was given a training ball signed by the Phoenix squad and the chance to meet some of his favourite players after the final whistle; this included having his photo taken with captain Andrew Durante and his jersey signed by midfielder Adam Parkhouse.

Matt said Dylan had a fantastic time and was stoked to receive this special treat from HELL.

“He was all smiles and just had an absolute blast; it was a great boost for him.”

To top it off, Matt said it was a good game to watch, with the Phoenix knocking in two late goals to even the score.

“And I have to say, the first Wanderers’ goal [scored by Brendon Santalab] was one of the best I’ve seen in the A-League for a long time!”

  • New lease of life

Ethan McEachen’s life has taken a dramatic turn for the better since taking ownership of a Phonak Roger Focus hearing system, thanks to a helping hand from Satan’s Little Helper.

Ten-year-old Ethan was recently diagnosed with auditory processing disorder (APD). Estimated to affect one in 20 children, APD is a disorder that interferes with the way in which the brain interprets information it receives through the ears.

The PRF system features a pen microphone that Ethan’s teachers wear around their neck, broadcasting what they’re saying directly into Ethan’s ears via a headset.

After coming up several hundred dollars short of the $4,800 required for the system, and with Ministry of Education funding hard to come by, Ethan’s mother Petra turned to Satan’s Little Helper for assistance.

“We were overjoyed when HELL stepped in and offered to cover the shortfall. The system has made such a difference to Ethan already. Where previously in class he would have to look at what others were doing for cues, now he knows exactly what’s happening,” says Petra.

“His teachers noticed an immediate difference; they said Ethan was more confident and didn’t need to be constantly checking what instructions were given, meaning he can now self-manage his work. He’s also able to better participate in class discussions and group work.”

Importantly for Ethan, the system is portable and can easily be transported between classrooms and different schools as he progresses through intermediate and college.

“It’s just made learning so much easier and will help him reach his full potential. At his final assembly, he got up and sung a solo – the perfect proof of how the system has made him more confident and self-assured!”

  • Sticks do the trick for Charlize

Twelve-year-old Charlize Hartshorne, from Hamilton, is a keen hockey fan. She also has hemiplegia, which has caused her left leg to grow slower than the right – but that hasn’t stopped her from playing the game she loves.

When Satan’s Little Helper heard her story, he reckoned tickets to the Trans-Tasman Trophy Hockey Series in Auckland for her and her family would be a well-deserved treat.

Charlize, her mum Priscilla and younger sister Savannah all enjoyed a day of matches at the Lloyd Elsmore Hockey Stadium with a complimentary lunch courtesy of HELL, before spending the night at a nearby hotel. Priscilla says they all had “a blast”.

“I’d kept the outing a surprise, so Charlize didn’t know what we were doing. She spotted the Black Sticks practising and asked what we were doing there. When I told her, she was the over the moon! The atmosphere was awesome; so many people turned up to watch,” she says. “It was so good to spend quality time away with the girls.”

Charlize’s condition is the result of a mild stroke that she suffered during birth. Since she was three years old, she has been through ongoing physiotherapy, worn various casts to promote growth in her left leg, and been given Botox injections to make her calf muscle more elastic.

Priscilla says Charlize has never let it hold her back: “She plays in defence and her favourite part is getting into the goal after a penalty and revving up her teammates! It’s really good to see, because keeping active is also good for her leg.”
